A Plea

Dear Players of Ultimate,

If you have been fouled, picked or you notice a violation (travel, straddle, disc space, double team) please call it.

Don't be intimidated. If you don't call it, in all likelihood the offenders will continue to bend the rules. This sport is self-officiated, nobody is going (or allowed) to call it for you.

Most importantly: if you are contesting a call, please do not take eight minutes to explain your reasoning. That is what the sideline (and beers at the bar) are for. Simply state you are contesting the call, and send the disc back to the thrower.

why cant u explain it if you think a bad call has been made. If you clarify your position then sometimes it can make a difference to the call.

As players we are on the field to play frisbee, not pfaff.

My point is that there is a time and a place to discuss why you called this or contested that, and it is not on the field where it takes up game time.

Ultimate doesn't need refs/observers to make it highly watchable, it needs players to respect the finality of a call, and the finality of a contest.

'Foul!'
'Contested!'

And we go back to playing.

but some calls suck!

It's lack of knowledge of the rules that causes this. There are very few players who are actually well versed in the rules and therefore are capable of making calls without dicking about. The beauty of playing a sport with referees is that they take out the hassle of knowing the rules of what you're playing.

I've seen players who have been playing for years and are still operating on the five or six basic rules they were taught at their first pickup game. It should be expected that if you're going to be playing at Nationals (hell, even Regionals) you should know the rules.

Reminds me of one of the best heckles I've ever heard - during a ridiculous pick call argument at WUCC 2006, someone (not on either team) called out "If you're ever going to bother learning the rules to ultimate, the WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS might be an ideal time to do it!"
